Press Release

NOVA SCOTIA SNOWBOARDING PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

MORE GIRLS WANTED IN THE SPORT

On February 25 and 26th, Martock will be having the Nova Scotia Snowboarding Association Provincial Championships. These events will be sponsored by the NSSA and Rossignol.

Anyone who would like to compete in Parallel Giant Slalom (PGS) and Slopestyle (SS), can register on site starting at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday (PGS) and Sunday (SS). There may be a Halfpipe event if the weather holds and Martock can build the halfpipe this week.

Nova Scotia is a remarkable place for the level of snowboarders that hail from here – who all had their start at Ski Martock, Ski Wentworth and Ski BenEoin. We currently have two Olympians, Sarah Conrad and Trevor Andrew. Several of our upcoming younger snowboarders are making the podium in national competitions. Given the interest there is currently in the Olympics, there is a great desire to grow the sport in Nova Scotia. The Nova Scotia Snowboard Association is working hard to encourage and organize cool competitions for young upcoming athletes in the province. For more information on how to get involved, please go to www.nssa.ca and for profiles of our upcoming snowboarders , check the following: http://www.nssa.ca/4profiles.html All of the upcoming kids are featured.

Many of our riders have been competing at events in Calgary at the Canada Olympic Park (COP). Two Nova Scotian amateur riders came home with medals: Andrew “Bubba” Armstrong, 16, won Silver in the Amateur NorAms and Emily Ernst 13, got the Bronze for females in the Halfpipe Amateur NorAms.

Last week, Sarah Conrad placed 15th overall in the Women’s Halfpipe at the Torino Olympics – another snowboarder who started at Martock, our first Nova Scotian female Olympian in snowboarding.

Alexandra Duckworth won silver at the World Junior Snowboarding Big Air Event in Korea (2 weeks ago). This past weekend, Friday and Saturday, February 17th and 18th, she made the podium twice, winning gold in Slopestyle and Bronze in Halfpipe in a North American (NorAM competition in Calgary). She has been competing at the highest levels in the world now for about two years, making top 10 in two Grand Prixs this season competing with the best US Olympian snowboarders who came in the top 4 for Halfpipe at the Olympics last week.

The NSSA is especially interested in getting girls involved. With what happened with women in the halfpipe at the Olympics, we’re hoping more girls will become competitors in the many categories offered by the sport.

The NSSA is a non-profit organization, a member of the Canadian Snowboarding Federation, and an active member of Sport Nova Scotia.
